날이 저문다.

먼 곳에서 빈 뜰이 넘어진다. 

무한천공(無限天空) 바람 겹겹이

사람은 혼자 펄럭이고

조금씩 파도치는 거리의 집들

끝까지 남아있는 햇빛 하나가 

어딜까 어딜까 도시를 끌고 간다. 

날이 저문다. 

날마다 우리나라에 

아름다운 여자들은 떨어져 쌓인다.

잠속에서도 빨리빨리 걸으며

침상 밖으로 흩어지는

모래는 끝없고

한 겹씩 벗겨지는 생사(生死)의

저 캄캄한 수세기(數世紀)를 향하여 

아무도 

자기의 살을 감출 수는 없다. 

집이 흐느낀다. 

날이 저문다. 

바람에 갇혀

일평생이 낙과(落果)처럼 흔들린다. 

높은 지붕마다 남몰래

하늘의 넓은 시계소리를 걸어놓으며

광야(曠野)에 쌓이는

아, 아름다운 모래의 여자들

부서지면서 우리는

가장 긴 그림자를 뒤에 남겼다.

This apartment full of books could crack open

to the thick jaws, the bulging eyes

of monsters, easily: Once open the books, you have to face

the underside of everything you’ve loved—

the rack and pincers held in readiness, the gag

even the best voices have had to mumble through,

the silence burying unwanted children—

women, deviants, witnesses—in desert sand.
Kenneth tells me he’s been arranging his books

so he can look at Blake and Kafka while he types;

yes; and we still have to reckon with Swift

loathing the woman’s flesh while praising her mind,
Goethe’s dread of the Mothers, Claudel vilifying Gide,

and the ghosts—their hands clasped for centuries—

of artists dying in childbirth, wise-women charred at the stake,

centuries of books unwritten piled behind these shelves;

and we still have to stare into the absence

of men who would not, women who could not, speak

to our life—this still unexcavated hole

called civilization, this act of translation, this half-world.
